Psychiatric Assessment At Well Mind People

At Well Mind People, our Psychiatric Assessment service offers a thorough medical evaluation for adults and young people who may benefit from a specialist opinion about their mental health. Assessments are carried out by a Consultant Psychiatrist, who is trained to diagnose mental health conditions, offer treatment recommendations and, where appropriate, prescribe medication.

A psychiatric assessment helps you gain a clear understanding of your symptoms and provides reassurance, clarity and direction. It can be especially useful if you are unsure what is causing your difficulties, if symptoms are complex, or if you have tried therapy alone and feel you need additional support.

During the appointment, the psychiatrist will take time to explore your current difficulties, emotional wellbeing, past history, physical health, lifestyle factors and any previous treatments. You may also be asked about sleep, mood, concentration, anxiety, trauma, relationships and daily functioning. Some questionnaires may be used to support the assessment. This is a collaborative, respectful conversation, and you will always be given space to talk openly.

The assessment usually lasts around 60 to 90  minutes. At the end of the appointment, the psychiatrist will explain their clinical opinion in clear, understandable language. This may include a diagnosis (if appropriate), treatment options, and advice on therapy, lifestyle changes or medication. If medication is recommended, the psychiatrist will explain how it works, potential benefits and risks, and answer any questions you may have.

A written report is often provided, summarising the assessment and recommended plan. This can be shared with your GP or therapist if you choose.

Psychiatric assessments can support people experiencing depression, anxiety disorders, OCD, trauma-related conditions, bipolar disorder, ADHD, eating disorders, sleep problems, emotional difficulties, or symptoms that feel overwhelming or hard to understand. For some clients, a combination of therapy and medication offers the most effective approach, and the assessment helps ensure treatment is safe, tailored and evidence-based.

Many people find that a psychiatric assessment brings clarity and reassurance. Understanding what is happening and why symptoms are occurring can make the next steps feel far more manageable. It also ensures that you receive the right level of support at the right time.

If you feel a psychiatric assessment may benefit you, we are here to help you take that next step with confidence.
